Iba Gani Adams’ Leadership in Combating Insecurity Across Yorubaland

OPU Worldwide Secretariat Report

To all OPU Members Worldwide,

Warm greetings to you all in the spirit of unity, progress, and continued commitment to the wellbeing of the Oodua nation.
As your Secretary-General, I am pleased to present this important update on the recent actions and contributions of our father and leader, Iba Gani Adams, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, at the South-West Zonal Security Summit held in Lagos, jointly supported by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Lagos State Government.

(1)Aare Gani Adams’ Strong Stand on Insecurity At the summit, Iba Gani Adams once again demonstrated his unwavering dedication to the safety, stability, and future of Yorubaland. He addressed the rising wave of insecurity including banditry, kidnapping, violent attacks, and the infiltration of criminal elements across communities and stressed that the time for urgent, decisive action has come. He reaffirmed that security is the backbone of development, and without securing our land, economic, cultural, and social progress cannot be sustained.

(2) Call for State Policing A central highlight of his address was his clear and consistent advocacy for the establishment of State Police across all South-West states. He emphasized that: • Localised policing is no longer optional, but a necessity for effective protection. • Security frameworks must be guided by local knowledge, community relationships, and real-time intelligence. • A regional model combining federal collaboration with state autonomy will ensure faster response and greater accountability. This strong push aligns with the long-standing aspirations of the Yoruba people and the core values OPU upholds — a safer, stronger, and more self-reliant Yorubaland.

(3)Home-Grown Security Strategy Aare Adams urged leaders and stakeholders to adopt home-grown solutions rooted in our culture, values, and traditional structures. He highlighted the need for: • Active community participation • Youth involvement • Strengthened traditional institutions • Intelligence-led operations • Technology-driven security systems He also warned that the South-West must not wait for insecurity to escalate before responding with firmness and unity.

(4) A Call for Unity and Collective Responsibility The Aare Ona Kakanfo made it clear that the fight against insecurity is not the government’s duty alone. It requires: • Joint efforts across state borders • Stronger regional partnerships • Public vigilance • Support from private individuals, organisations, and Yoruba in the diaspora He encouraged every Yoruba son and daughter home and abroad to remain informed, involved, and united for the greater good of our land.

CONCLUSION
On behalf of the OPU Worldwide Secretariat, we commend Iba Gani Adams for his unwavering commitment, courageous leadership, and proactive efforts in ensuring lasting peace across Yorubaland. Let us remain steadfast, united, and dedicated to the progress and security of our people. Together, we move forward.
